Here, you can find the only beach in Reykjavik with sand from the Atlantic Ocean. It has received the Blue Flag 2008 which means that it is clean and safe where you can enjoy the outdoors. You can play volleyball on the beach and play in the sand or go for a swim. The water is heated during summertime and the water should be around 18° - 20°C.
In nice weather, the beach is crowded with happy citizens who are enjoying the sunshine.
It is free to go to the beach and the pools in the area, the toilets and locker rooms are free of charge. If you would need to rent a locker for your clothes, it costs 200 ISK.
The surroundings are spectacular where you can enjoy walks along the coastline, or you can cycle on marked paths. In walking distance is Öskjuhlíðin and Perlan.
Opening hours
From 15th of May until 14th of August, it is open from 11-19 every day. During the winter, it is open from 17-19 Mondays and Fridays and from 11-13 on Mondays.
How to get there
By bus: From Hlemmur, you can take bus number 19 which stops right in front of the beach. For further information, see www.straeto.is
By car: Drive towards the Perlan from downtown. Turn right before Perlan to Flugvallavegur. Drive straight forward passing Loftleidir. There are a lot of parking spaces at the beach.
